THE EARLY YEARS OF
As a first-generation Ghanaian residing in the States, with both parents having strong religious and deep cultural background, my childhood was full of discussion, active debate, and compromise as we worked through our differing thoughts and opinions.
I learned from a young age to be proud of my background and to respect, appreciate and understand contrasting perspectives and differing worldviews. I was taught to advocate for vulnerable individuals.
I remember canvassing door-to-door with my father for the less fortunate kids to get involved in our neighborhood boy scouts that kept a lot of us from trouble because there were less extracurricular activities to do. This became a yearly tradition and it felt good to be making a small contribution to a good cause. My father instilled in me the importance of helping others as we progress through life. And experiences like these gave me a strong belief in leadership, community and advocacy.
He believes that family is the most important thing in the world. Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter. The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family
I consider it a blessing to be married with children.
